Ted Wright joined the Kent County Constabulary in December, 1963 having served six years in the Army.
His sole intention was to become a member of the Dog Section and he achieved this in 1966.
He worked four patrol dogs, the second of which was the subject of his first book. 'One Dog and Her Man, The Life of Police Dog Bess,' in which Bess re-counts their exploits and tells of the many successes, trials and tribulations and funny episodes that they had together.
In 1984, Ted was appointed as Force Dog Training Officer and attended the coveted Home Office Police Dog Training Instructors Course to become an Accredited Instructor to Advanced level.
He was responsible for the instigation and training of Multi-scented Drug Detection Dogs within the Force.
Following promotion Ted was transferred to become the East Kent Dog Sergeant and as such, worked Explosives Detection Dog, Mitch, the subject of this book.
This too, although obviously an extremely serious subject and covering the part they played in the bombing of The Royal Marines Barracks at Deal in which so many young men died, includes many humorous interludes too!
Sadly, injury forced Ted to take early retirement in 1991 and Mitch retired with him.
A wonderful career, inspiring Ted to produce these two great books, and now to be able to offer them as E-books is a terrific way for people to learn just how difficult a task it is to keep us safe, when all around is the ever-present danger caused by terrorism in the modern world.

Ted The Dog Books
One Dog And Her Man, The Life of Police Dog 'Bess'
Bomb Dog 'Mitch', Another Box of Dogs
The Author and Super Bomb Dog 'Mitch' sharing a quiet moment with the first of his books.
| Great non-fiction books, by the author Ted Wright, with 25 years of service as a Kent police dog handler. |
These books bring home just how policing in the United Kingdom has changed over the past 45 years. They also demonstrate, more importantly, how a police dog handler and his dog become a unit, an inseparable team, and the unique partnership formed between man and animal. True stories of the loyalty and complete trust that is an essential part of modern day police dog handling.
When reading just a short way into the books, you begin to appreciate the bond between Ted and his dogs, you also realise that the dogs have an unconditional love for their handler that humans rarely experience.
Ted's first book: 'One Dog And Her Man' The Life of Police Dog 'Bess' has an extremely engaging and unusual style, in the sense that it was written as though the dog herself wrote it, giving a real insight to her life. Sub-headed 'The Life Of Police Dog Bess' it draws you in from page one, and once started, you get that feeling of not being able to put it down, so get yourself ready to let the chores build up, and put your feet up! The author's great sense of humour shines through, even when one considers the perils faced by Handler and Dog, in everyday situations, there is never a dull moment. The book touches upon all of the human emotions, and has funny, serious, and at times sad moments, nevertheless I believe you will enjoy it, and be looking forward to reading the second, but hopefully not the last, great book, 'Another Box of Dogs'
The Story Of Bomb Dog Mitch!.
Beautiful 'Bess', Super Patrol Dog, even though she did have floppy ears!
"I opened the factory door and stepped down two steps into the gloom, ready to set the dog to his task. The door was on a spring, and it closed gently behind me with a faint click. I turned to look behind me and my heart sank, for there hanging on the door that I had just entered, about waist height, was an Improvised Explosive Device! A Bomb, High Explosives. A booby trap designed to blow me and my dog, and anyone with me, to Kingdom Come. I could see that the explosives were encased in nails, and nuts and bolts; ready-made shrapnel, designed to rip and tear into unsuspecting flesh"

Terrifying times that we must all pray, will never return. But we must remain ever vigilant......

Since His retirement, Ted has taken up agility classes with two energetic Border Collies, and is half the size he was in the image at the top of the page! It just goes to show, you can retire from the job, but never from the passion for working with dogs! (Perhaps there will be a "Ted Wright weight loss guide"!)
